Our History

Boynton Chapel Methodist Church:

A Legacy of Faith, Community, and Transformation

Since its founding in 1880, right in the heart of Houston’s 3rd Ward, Boynton Chapel

Methodist Church has been a cornerstone of faith and service. With a history rich in

devotion and community engagement, the church has long stood as a beacon of hope

and love. What started as a small gathering in the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Burr,

where eight committed believers came together, has grown into a congregation deeply

woven into the city’s cultural and spiritual fabric.

The Early Years: Humble Beginnings and Rapid Growth

At its inception, Boynton Chapel was known as the Dallas Street Methodist Episcopal

Church. As part of the Texas Conference, it secured its first property on the corner of

Dallas and Paige Streets. The church grew quickly under its first pastor, Rev. Peter

Bush, and by 1889, the name Boynton Chapel Methodist Church was officially adopted.

The church’s membership soon swelled, and by 1915, it had over 300 members—a

testament to its ever-growing influence in the community.

Building a Home for Worship and Community

The church saw expansion to meet its growing needs under the leadership of pastors

like Rev. Jesse W. Gilder and Rev. S.W. Johnson. In 1916, the church’s facilities were

enhanced, adding a gymnasium, roof garden, reading room, playground, and a

swimming pool—the only one open to African Americans in Houston from 1926 to 1939.

Later, a nursery school was also established, reflecting a commitment to support

families and nurture education. The church wasn't just a place for worship but for the

community to gather, grow, and thrive.

A New Vision and a Fresh Home

In 1954, Rev. Homer D. Pace had a vision for a new, larger church home, and under his

guidance, property was purchased at 2812 Milby Street. The renowned John S. Chase,

the first licensed African American architect in Texas, was commissioned to design the

new building. Completed in 1958, the church is a beautiful example of mid-century

modern architecture, featuring stunning stained-glass walls, pink marble accents, and

elegant flying gables. This new building became more than a structure—it was a symbol

of faith, progress, and a fresh chapter in the life of the congregation.

A Landmark of Historical Significance

In 2023, the Texas Historical Commission honored Boynton Chapel Methodist Church

as a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark. This special recognition celebrates the

church's profound legacy and preserves its place in Houston’s history. The marker will

proudly remind everyone of the church's longstanding influence and dedication to

serving the 3rd Ward.

A Tradition of Service and Giving Back

Boynton Chapel has always been about more than just Sunday services. For over 140

years, the church has served as a catalyst for change and an advocate for social

justice. Among its members are notable community leaders like Christia Adair,

Madgelean "Mama" Bush, and Dr. Forde McWilliams, who helped shape the church and

the community. The church has long been involved in initiatives that empower youth,

feed the hungry, and meet various needs of the 3rd Ward’s residents.

A recent example of Boynton’s commitment to service is its partnership with the Texas

Mission of Mercy and the Smiles Foundation. Together, they provided over $500,000

worth of free dental care to 500-600 local residents—a profound impact on the health

and well-being of the community.

Recognizing the need for affordable housing, Boynton Chapel formed the Boynton

Houston Community Development Corporation in 2022. This organization will partner to

build 15 affordable homes in the 3rd Ward, furthering the church’s mission to uplift

families and transform lives.

A Vision for the Future: Growth, Faith, and Community

In January 2023, Boynton Chapel took another step in its journey, joining the Global

Methodist Church denomination. With this affiliation, the church renewed its mission to

make disciples who worship passionately, love extravagantly, and witness boldly. That

same year, as part of its 143rd anniversary, the church embraced the theme “Making A

Difference,” drawn from Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ who

strengthens me.”

Today, under the enthusiastic leadership of Rev. Linda Davis, Boynton Chapel continues

to reach out to the 3rd Ward and beyond, ministering to spiritual and practical needs

alike. The church’s vision remains clear: empowering families, strengthening the church

body, and transforming the community—all for the glory of God.

A Place Where Faith Meets Action

Boynton Chapel Methodist Church has always been about more than a building. It’s a

community where faith meets action, and love knows no bounds. Throughout its rich

history, the church has lived out its call to worship fervently, serve selflessly, and stand

as a pillar of hope. Boynton Chapel remains dedicated to empowering families,

strengthening the church, and transforming the community.
